Description
1-Naphthol can be a white or colorless, slightly glossy, flaky crystal. It may also appear as small clusters or powders. It may appear light yellow or even pink if it has been in the air a while and oxidized. However, its actual color is light. It is difficult to smell 1-Naphthol for long periods of time. The laboratory maintains ventilation. Its melting point is not very high. It’s about 96 degrees C. This is slightly below the boiling point for water. Heating it in hot water can melt it easily. Its boiling temperature is around 278 degrees C. We usually see solid. The solubility of 1-Naphthol is similar to that of the compound previously mentioned, which is “lipophilic, but not hydrophilic”. In water, it is very poorly soluble. It will dissolve slightly better in hot water. It is very fond of organic solvents, like alcohol, ether benzene and chloroform. It will also dissolve in water that is alkaline because it, too, has a slight acidity. 1-Naphthol reacts very strongly to air and light. The color of naphthol will darken over time if exposed to light and air. It is therefore stored in dark bottles in a dark, cool place. This method is universal for preserving phenolic compounds.

The application of 1-Naphthol
1. Use for dyes and other pigments
This was the traditional application of 1-Naphthol.
One of the most popular azo dyes is “Acid Red”, which is a brightly colored, durable dye.
The 1-Naphthol can be used directly as a “coupling agent” in the production of azo colors. It reacts with aromatic amines to form diazonium at specific sites, resulting in a wide range of azo dyes, such as oranges, reds, browns, and blacks.

2. Pesticide field

Through a simple alkylation, 1-naphthol is converted to 1-naphthalene-methyl-ether or 1-naphthalene-ethyl-ether. These substances are sweet-smelling and have a fruity and floral fragrance, similar to orange blossom or strawberry. They can be used in soaps, detergents, air fresheners, and cosmetics.
