Acid Yellow 17 belongs to the azo dye family and contains azo groups (- N=N -) in its molecular structure. It is linked to aromatic structures, forming the chromophore system of the dye. According to different sources, there are two CAS numbers and corresponding molecular formulas: one is 6359-98-4, with the molecular formula C ₁₆ H ₁₀ Cl ₂ N ₄ Na ₂ O ₇ S ₂;
Another type is listed as 642-62-6 in some databases, with the molecular formula C ₁₆ H ₉ N ₄ Na ∝ O ₉ S ₂. This difference is usually due to differences in product specifications (such as dye content and salt forms), but the core color structure is consistent. Due to the presence of sulfonic acid groups in the molecule, its aqueous solution exhibits anionic characteristics and is easily soluble in water, presenting a bright green yellow color.
2. Physical characteristics and morphology
This dye is usually a light yellow to yellow uniform powder. It is soluble in water, slightly soluble in ethanol and acetone, and insoluble in other common organic solvents. Its maximum absorption wavelength is 400 nm. In terms of chemical stability, the dye is stable at room temperature and pressure, with good acid and alkali resistance. When added to hydrochloric acid or sodium hydroxide solution, the color remains basically unchanged, but it turns green yellow in concentrated sulfuric acid and does not change after dilution.
It is worth noting that adding carved white powder can decolorize it, but it will be oxidized when exposed to air, and the color will recover and may appear red purple. When dyeing, if encountering copper or iron ions, the color light will appear slightly reddish and dark.
