Azithromycin, a commonly used antibiotic, is widely used in clinical practice. It has many advantages, including a wide spectrum of antibacterial action, minimal irritation of the gastrointestinal tract and rapid oral absorption. Both adults and children can use it.
Azithromycin has fewer side effects than cephalosporins and is therefore the most common antibiotic used in Chinese hospitals to treat bacterial infections.
Azithromycin, a semi-synthetic derivative of macrolides in the second generation, is structurally distinct from erythromycin. It inserts a substituted methyl nitrogen at the 9a positions of the erythromycin ring. This results in a macrolide with 15 members.
Azithromycin has a similar mechanism of action to erythromycin. It binds to the 50S subunit in sensitive bacterial ribosomes and inhibits RNA-dependent protein synthesis, while exerting its antibacterial properties.
Azithromycin is as effective against Chlamydia as erythromycin. Azithromycin is significantly more effective than erythromycin against gram negative bacteria. Its antibacterial action against influenza bacilli, Neisseria gonorrhoeae, and Neisseria meningitidis are also four times as strong.
Azithromycin is about two times more effective against Legionella, and has a significantly higher antibacterial effect against Enterobacteriaceae. The MIC of the vast majority Gram-negative bacteria is below 1 mg/l.
Staphylococcus Aureus and Streptococcus Pyogenes are cross resistant to Azithromycin. It is also effective against Toxoplasma pallidum and Toxoplasma gondii.
Azithromycin can be used to treat infections of the respiratory tract, urinary tract, reproductive tract, soft tissues, and skin caused by sensitive bacteria.
