N-Iodosuccinimide Description
N-iodosuccinimide is a white, needle-shaped crystal. It decomposes when it comes into contact with water. It is soluble only in dioxane and methanol. The silver salt of succinimide is obtained by reacting an aqueous succinimide solution with silver oxide and then with iodine. N-Iodosuccinimide is used as a reagent to produce iodinated ketones and aldehydes.
N-Iodosuccinimide is commonly abbreviated NIS. It’s a white needle-shaped crystal. Melting point 200 to 201, soluble with acetone, methanol and dioxane. Insoluble with carbon tetrachloride or ether. Contact with water causes it to decompose. It can be prepared in the laboratory by reacting N succinimide silver with elemental Iodine.
