Description

Ferric oxide, Commonly known as iron oxide red or hematite, it is one of the most common iron oxides in our daily lives. From a physical perspective, it is a typical red or reddish brown powder that appears bright red when pure, but particle size and trace impurities can affect the specific color tone, ranging from orange red to deep purple red.

The crystal structure of Ferric oxide is very stable, and the alpha type is the most common in nature, which is the main reason why rocks and soils appear red. It has a high density and melting point, exceeding 1565 ° C. Its chemical properties are very stable and insoluble in water, but it can slowly dissolve in strong acids.

In terms of chemical properties, Ferric oxide exhibits typical alkaline oxide characteristics. Although it is insoluble in water, it can react with acids to produce corresponding iron salts and water, such as reacting with hydrochloric acid to produce ferric chloride. It has excellent thermal stability, but can be reduced by reducing agents such as hydrogen, carbon monoxide, or carbon at high temperatures to produce black iron oxide or ultimately metallic iron, which is one of the core reactions in blast furnace ironmaking.

In addition, it usually does not have strong oxidizing properties, but can act as an oxidant in certain specific reactions, reacting violently with aluminum powder to release a large amount of heat, generating aluminum oxide and liquid iron.

Structurally, the stability of Ferric oxide is largely attributed to its highly ordered crystal arrangement. In α – Fe ₂ O3, oxygen ions are arranged in an approximately hexagonal close packed manner, while iron ions occupy one-third of the octahedral voids, forming a very dense and symmetrical structure. This structure gives it high hardness and stability, while also determining that it has almost no magnetism.

Ferric oxide also exists in homogeneous and heterogeneous crystals such as gamma type, which have strong magnetism and are not as structurally stable as alpha type. When heated to a certain temperature, they irreversibly transform into alpha type. It is precisely this strong and stable physicochemical property that makes it an extremely durable and reliable substance in nature and industrial applications.

The application of Ferric oxide

1. Classic pigments
Pigments are the oldest and most intuitive use of Ferric oxide. The history of humans using natural hematite as a red pigment has lasted for tens of thousands of years. From prehistoric cave paintings to tomb decorations in ancient Egypt, the indelible red color that has lasted for thousands of years can be seen.
In modern times, synthetic iron oxide red is one of the cornerstones of the coatings and paints industry. Whether it’s building exteriors, bridge steel structures, or furniture and wood, they all need it to provide durable, inexpensive, and strong covering colors in red and reddish brown. Ferric oxide has good light resistance, weather resistance, and chemical resistance, which can effectively protect the underlying materials.

The application of Ferric oxide has already surpassed traditional coatings and has widely entered the fields of plastics, rubber, paper, cosmetics, and food. In building materials, it is also the main coloring agent for colored cement, colored asphalt, artificial marble and other products. The red color of the sidewalk tiles and roof tiles under our feet is likely to come from Ferric oxide.

2. As a “key component” in the fields of industry and materials
Here, Ferric oxide is not only a provider of color, but also a provider of functionality.
Metallurgical industry, which is a heavyweight industrial application of Ferric oxide. Ferric oxide is the main raw material for ironmaking. In the blast furnace, it is reduced to metallic iron by carbon monoxide, which is the cornerstone of modern steel civilization.

Functional materials: Thanks to their stable physicochemical properties and certain hardness, Ferric oxide is an important raw material or coloring agent for manufacturing special glass, ceramics, and enamel. More importantly, after special processing, it becomes a key component in the manufacture of magnetic materials. In recent years, nanoscale iron oxide has also shown great potential in high-tech fields such as catalysts, gas sensors, and negative electrode materials for lithium-ion batteries.

The high hardness of Ferric oxide makes refined iron oxide red powder a classic precision polishing agent used for polishing optical glass, metal devices, and jewelry.

3. As the “guardian” of safety and environment
This use is closely related to its physical and chemical properties.
In heavy-duty anti-corrosion coatings, Ferric oxide not only colors, but also serves as an important physical anti rust pigment. Its sheet-like particles can stack layer by layer in the paint film, forming a dense barrier that effectively blocks the penetration of moisture and oxygen, thereby delaying the corrosion of steel.

Due to its large specific surface area, strong adsorption and stability, Ferric oxide can be used as an adsorbent or precipitant in water treatment to help remove heavy metals and other pollutants from water. At the same time, it is also a cheap starting material for the production of other iron-based chemicals.
