Description

Indigo is not just a dye but a story of five thousand years of cultural exchange. It was once considered a luxury color, comparable to gold. It became a popular choice for clothing after the Industrial Revolution. It comes from ancient plants but has a molecular structure that is fundamental in organic chemistry.

Chemical and Physical Properties

Indigo’s unique properties determine its application process and performance.

1. Chemical structure and essence

Chemical name: Indigo’s IUPAC system is named 2- (1,3-dihydro-3-oxo-2H-indol-2-ylidene) -1,2-dihydro-3H-indol-3-one, which is an organic compound belonging to indole derivatives.

Molecular structure: The molecular core of the compound is a conjugated ring system consisting of two indole-ketone rings linked by a double carbon-carbon bond. This large conjugated planar system, which is capable of absorption photons at specific wavelengths and reflecting blue light in visible light, is what gives it its color.

Indigo carmine is an important isomer. Indirubin is also found in the indigo plants. Its molecular structure mirrors that of Indigo. However, it is usually a by-product. In order to maintain the quality of commercial Indigo dyes, the amount of indigo-red is strictly controlled.

2. Physical Properties

Appearance: Pure Indigo powder is usually a dark, crystalline blue with a bronze sheen.

Indigo’s core property is its solubility. Indigo is almost insoluble and insoluble in cold solvents. It cannot be used directly for staining. Due to this characteristic, both ancient and modern manufacturers must use chemical treatments to apply it.

Stability: Solid-state Indigo is relatively stable in terms of chemical properties but sensitive to strong oxidants or reducing agents. Photo-induced fading is induced by light and cellulose fibers. This is why denim has a “color fading effect”.

The application of Indigo

The wide application of Indigo
1. Textile dyeing
Denim: This is Indigo’s largest and most famous application. By controlling the number of immersion times and oxidation time, various blue tones ranging from light blue to dark black can be obtained. Its unique fading characteristics create a “vintage” effect, forming a vast cowboy culture.

Workwear and uniforms: Due to its sturdy, dirt resistant appearance and good water wash fastness, Indigo has long been used for workwear, military uniforms, and student uniforms.

Traditional clothing and handicrafts: Indigo, a plant, remains an important dye and carries profound cultural value in traditional crafts such as tie dyeing and wax dyeing in China, blue dyeing in Japan, and mud dyeing in West Africa around the world.

2. Used as a pigment
Due to Indigo’s insolubility, it can be made into pigments for:
Art pigments: used for oil painting, watercolor, etc.
Ink: Indigo can be used for printing.
Paint: Used historically for coloring wood.
3. In the field of food and cosmetics
Synthetic Indigo and its derivatives have been approved as food colorants for use in candies, pastries, beverages, etc., presenting a blue color. It is also used in lipstick, eye shadow and other cosmetics.
