Description

1. Chemical Properties and Classification

It is also known as porcelain or white clay. Kaolin belongs to the non-metallic mineral group. Its principal chemical components are silica and alumina with an ideal formula of Al 2 S 2 O 5 (OH).

Kaolin is classified as a 1:1 layered silicate mineral. Its crystal structure is made up of two layers of octahedral aluminum oxide flakes, separated by an oxygen atom.
They can be classified into different subtypes based on their origin and degree of crystallization. Examples include kaolinite (also known as diopside), perlite and kaolinite.

2.
Physical characteristics and morphology

Impurities can cause the powder to appear beige, grey, or light yellow. Kaolin’s Mohs hardness ranges from 2-2.5. Its density is between 2.54-2.60g/cm3, and its melting point is around 1785 degrees C. Kaolin is a unique material with its plasticity, fire-resistance, insulation and chemical stability. It is not soluble in water but can be easily dispersed in water and has some strength after drying.

The particles of kaolin are usually smaller than 2 microns.
They have a high specific surface area, a large adsorption capability, and good ion-exchange properties. Its physical and chemical characteristics will change significantly after calcination, including increased hardness and brightness.

3. Formation and Industry Positioning

Kaolin is an abundant clay mineral found in nature. It is formed mainly by the weathering of aluminosilicates such as mica and feldspar under humid and warm climate conditions.

China is home to abundant Kaolin resources. Production areas are spread across the country.
Maoming, Beihai, Longyan, Fujian, Jingdezhen, Jiangxi and others are among the most notable. Kaolin is one of four non-metallic minerals that are widely used due to its physical and chemical properties. It has been used in many industrial fields, including ceramics, papermaking and coatings. It is a basic raw material that is essential to modern industry.

The application of Kaolin

Kaolin is mainly used for its main purpose.

Due to its unique chemical and physical properties, kaolin is a versatile non-metallic raw material that plays a vital role in both traditional and high-tech industries. The four main fields of its use can be summarized as follows:

Ceramic Industry

Kaolin gives ceramic bodies a good plasticity and facilitates molding operations. Kaolin gives ceramics a good degree of plasticity, and it is easy to mold. During high-temperature firing, Kaolin becomes mullite and provides mechanical strength and thermal stability. Kaolin is used to make daily ceramics, such as tea sets, tableware and wall and floor tiles.
It’s also used for electrical ceramics, like insulators, and chemical ceramics. Kaolin’s application dates back to the Song Dynasty in China’s porcelain capitals such as Jingdezhen and Liling. Its name comes from Gaoling Village, located in Jingdezhen.

paper industry

Kaolin is a mineral pigment that is widely used by the paper industry. It is used as a coating pigment to create a dense and smooth coating on the surface of the paper.
This improves the smoothness, glossiness and ink absorption of the paper. It is used to produce high-end paper, such as copperplate and lightweight coated papers. Kaolin can be used as a filler between pulp fibers to improve the softness, opacity and whiteness of paper, while also reducing costs. Papermaking grade Kaolin is required to have high whiteness and fine particles with a narrow particle size range and low viscosity. It’s usually purified by grading and peeling processes.

Coatings and Rubber Plastic Industry

Kaolin is used in the paint industry as a functional filler and a base pigment. It can improve coatings’ covering power, weather resistance, and scrub resistance. Calcined Kaolin has a high whiteness, which is used for latex paints and water-based coatings. It also works well in powder coatings. Kaolin is used in the rubber industry as a filler that improves the tensile, wear, and tear resistance.
Kaolin is used to reinforce rubber products like tires, hoses and tapes. Kaolin is used in the plastic industry to improve electrical insulation, thermal stability and dimensional stability. It can be used with general plastics like polyvinylchloride, polyethylene and polypropylene.

Chemical Environmental Protection in High Tech Field

Kaolin that has been deep processed has a wide range of applications in high-tech. Modified Kaolin is used as catalyst carriers for automotive exhaust purification and petroleum cracking catalysts.
Kaolin, and its modified products, can be used as adsorbents for heavy metal ions removal and organic pollutants. In pesticide carriers, Kaolin is used to disperse and fill wettable powders. Superfine Kaolin can be used in cosmetics for eye shadow, foundation, and other products that require good spreadability and adsorption. Kaolin also plays an important role in the latest fields, such as pharmaceutical tablet excipients. It is used for plastic agricultural films anti fog agents. Fertilizer anti caking agents. Special ceramics (electronic, bioceramics) and aerospace composite materials.

Kaolin is used to reflect the evolution of natural mineral from traditional handicrafts into modern industrial civilization. Kaolin is the foundation for Jingdezhen’s millennium ceramic capital. It also helps to support the glory of ceramic arts.
It is an essential functional material in modern papermaking, rubber, and coatings industries. It ensures the quality of everyday necessities. The unique chemical and physical properties of this ancient mineral are continuously contributing to the advancement of human civilization.
