Description

Introduction to Kaolinite
1. Chemical properties and classification
Kaolinite is a type of hydrated aluminosilicate mineral, belonging to the 1:1 layered silicate, and is the main constituent mineral of kaolin. Its theoretical chemical formula is Al ₂ Si ₂ O ₅ (OH) ₄ or written as 2SiO ₂ · Al ₂ O ∝· 2H ₂ O, with a theoretical chemical composition of SiO ₂ 46.54%, Al ₂ O ∝ 39.5%, and H ₂ O 13.96%. The crystal structure is composed of a layer of silicon oxygen tetrahedral sheet and a layer of aluminum oxygen octahedral sheet connected by a common oxygen atom, and the interlayer is bonded by hydrogen bonds, so Kaolinite does not have interlayer expansion.

2. Physical characteristics and morphology
Pure Kaolinite is white or light gray in color, with a fine texture and a Mohs hardness of 1-2.5. Its density is about 2.54-2.60 g/cm ³, and its melting point is about 1785 ° C. Soil like or dense block like aggregates have water absorption when dry and plasticity when wet – wet soil can be molded into various shapes without breaking and can remain unchanged for a long time. The mineral has stable chemical properties, good insulation, fire resistance, and acid resistance.

3. Formation and industry positioning
Kaolinite is one of the most widely distributed clay minerals in nature, mainly formed by weathering or hydrothermal alteration of aluminosilicate minerals such as feldspar and mica under humid and hot climate conditions. Named after Gaoling Village in Jingdezhen, Jiangxi Province, the pure kaolin is also known as “Baiyun soil”. As one of the four major non-metallic minerals, Kaolinite and its constituent kaolin have a wide range of applications in dozens of industrial fields such as ceramics, papermaking, coatings, rubber, refractory materials, etc. It is one of the important indicators to measure the development level of a country’s non-metallic mineral industry.

The application of Kaolinite

The main uses of Kaolinite
Kaolinite, as the core mineral component of kaolin, plays an irreplaceable fundamental role in many industrial fields due to its unique plasticity, refractoriness, chemical stability, and adsorption properties.

Ceramic manufacturing in the ceramic industry is the largest application area of Kaolinite, accounting for over 40% of the total global production of kaolin. Kaolinite endows ceramic bodies with good plasticity, facilitating molding operations; During the high-temperature firing process, Kaolinite is transformed into mullite, providing mechanical strength and thermal stability for ceramic products; Its high whiteness ensures the appearance quality of ceramic products. Kaolinite is widely used in the production of daily ceramics (tableware, tea sets), architectural ceramics (wall and floor tiles, sanitary ware), electrical ceramics (insulators), and chemical ceramics. Kaolinite, mainly composed of kaolin, has always been the core raw material for ceramic production in famous porcelain capitals in China such as Jingdezhen and Liling.
paper industry
Kaolinite is one of the most widely used inorganic mineral pigments in the paper industry.
As a coating pigment, its sheet-like structure is coated on the surface of paper to form a smooth and dense coating, significantly improving the smoothness, glossiness, ink absorption, and printing adaptability of paper. It is widely used in the production of high-end printing paper such as copperplate paper and lightweight coated paper. As a filler, Kaolinite is filled between pulp fibers, which can improve the opacity, whiteness, and softness of paper while reducing production costs. Papermaking grade Kaolinite requires high whiteness, fine particles, narrow particle size distribution, and low viscosity, and is usually purified using grading and peeling processes.
Coatings, Rubber and Plastic Industry
Kaolinite is used as a building pigment and functional filler in the coatings industry. It can regulate the rheological properties of coatings, prevent pigment settling, improve the covering power, scrub resistance, and weather resistance of coatings.
Calcined Kaolinite is widely used in latex paints, water-based coatings, and powder coatings due to its high whiteness and high electrical resistivity. In the rubber industry, Kaolinite is used as a reinforcing filler to improve the tensile strength, wear resistance, and tear resistance of rubber products. It is commonly used in products such as tires, hoses, tapes, and seals. In the plastic industry, Kaolinite improves the electrical insulation, thermal stability, and dimensional stability of plastic products, and is suitable for general plastics such as polyvinyl chloride, polyethylene, and polypropylene.
Chemical Environmental Protection and High tech Field
Kaolinite, which has undergone deep processing, has shown broad application prospects in the high-tech field. In terms of catalyst carriers, modified Kaolinite is used for petroleum cracking catalysts and automotive exhaust purification catalysts. In the field of adsorbent materials, Kaolinite and its modified products can be used for the adsorption and removal of heavy metal ions and organic pollutants in wastewater treatment. Kaolinite is used as a filler and dispersant for wettable powders in pesticide carriers. In the cosmetics industry, superfine Kaolinite is used for foundation make-up, eye shadow and other products to provide good spread and absorption. In addition, Kaolinite plays a unique role in cutting-edge fields such as pharmaceutical tablet excipients, plastic agricultural film anti fog agents, fertilizer anti caking agents, special ceramics (electronic ceramics, bioceramics), and aerospace composite materials.

The use of Kaolinite fully reflects the evolution of natural minerals from traditional handicrafts to modern industrial civilization. It is not only the cultural foundation of Jingdezhen’s millennium porcelain capital, but also supports the glory of ceramic art; It is also an indispensable functional material for modern papermaking, coatings, and rubber industries, ensuring the quality of daily necessities; It has shown new vitality in environmental governance and new material development. This ancient mineral is continuously serving the development of human civilization with its unique physical and chemical endowments.
