Description

1. Chemical properties and classification
Manganese violet, The English name Manganese Violet, with pigment index number Pigment Violet 16 (PV 16), is an inorganic pigment. Its chemical name is Ammonium Manganese Pyrophosphate, and its chemical formula is usually expressed as NH ₄ MnP ₂ O ₇ or (NH ₄) ₂ Mn ₂ (P ₂ O ₇) ₂, with a CAS number of 10101-66-3. In terms of chemical classification, it belongs to metal double salts, composed of manganese, phosphorus, and ammonium, and is an important representative variety in the family of purple inorganic pigments.

2. Physical characteristics and morphology
At room temperature, Manganese violet is a bright red phase purple powder. It has extremely excellent light resistance (ASTM rating of level 1, highest grade), heat resistance up to 250 ° C, excellent weather resistance, and no color bleeding or migration characteristics. This pigment is insoluble in water and has moderate hiding power and low coloring strength (dyeing intensity). It has good acid resistance, but poor alkali resistance, and will be decomposed and destroyed when encountering strong acids or bases. The density is about 2.6-3.0 g/cm ³, and the oil absorption is 20-30 g/100g.

3. Discovery process and industry positioning
Manganese violet is a synthetic pigment first discovered by E. Leykauf in Germany in 1868, initially known as “Nuremberg violet”. Due to its bright color, it was initially used as a substitute for the expensive cobalt violet. However, compared to cobalt violet, manganese violet has lower color saturation, so its application in traditional oil painting is not widespread. In modern industry, due to its non-toxic nature (free of heavy metals such as lead and cadmium) and its friendliness to human health and the environment, Manganese violet has become one of the safest purple colorants in the cosmetics and personal care product fields. In addition, it also occupies an important position in the fields of plastics, coatings, and artistic pigments.

The application of Manganese Violet

The main use of Manganese violet
Manganese violet plays an irreplaceable role in various fields such as personal care, materials science, and artistic creation due to its bright red purple color, excellent light and weather resistance, and non-toxic and safe characteristics. Its uses can be summarized into the following three major fields:
Cosmetics and personal care products: safe coloring agents for cosmetics
This is the field with the largest usage of Manganese violet, and also its most core application scenario. Due to its non toxicity, non acne causing properties, and safety to the human body, Manganese violet has been approved by the US FDA and EU cosmetics regulations for use as a coloring agent. It is widely used in the production of eye shadow, powder blusher, lipstick, nail polish, eyeliner pen, eyebrow powder and other cosmetics products. Its main role is to give these products a bright, soft purple tone. In base makeup products such as foundation make-up, adding a trace of Manganese violet can also effectively neutralize the common yellow tone in Asian skin, and improve the whiteness and clarity of base makeup.

Plastics and Coatings Industry: Optical Whitening and Toner
In the materials industry, Manganese violet is mainly used for coloring plastics (such as PVC, PE, PP) and coatings (such as powder coatings, industrial coatings). Its core value lies in utilizing the principle of complementary colors – purple can effectively absorb yellow light. Therefore, adding a very small amount of Manganese violet to white or light colored plastics and coatings can achieve a “physical whitening” effect, significantly reducing the yellowing phenomenon of the substrate, making the white color purer and brighter. In addition, it is also used to mix various purple toned industrial paints and plastic products.

Art pigments and painting field: professional artist pigments
In the field of art supplies, Manganese violet is an indispensable color among professional artists’ pigments. Although its coloring power is not as strong as organic pigments, it is highly praised for its unique red purple tone, excellent light resistance (UV resistance without fading), and good drying and covering performance in oily media. It is used to produce oil painting pigments, watercolor pigments, watercolor pigments, and acrylic pigments, but due to its instability in alkaline environments, Manganese violet is not suitable for Fresco (wet wall painting) creation.

In summary, the use of Manganese violet perfectly embodies the combination of “safety and aesthetics”. It is not only a “color magician” who endows users with beautiful makeup in eye shadow and powder blusher, but also a “white brightener” that improves the quality of plastic products through optical principles. At the same time, it is also a “durable guard” for recording colors on the artist’s palette. This classic inorganic pigment, with the support of modern technology, is continuously exerting its unique value in the fields of daily chemical, materials, and art.
