Isonicotinic acid is slightly soluble in cold water, soluble in hot water, and insoluble in alcohols, benzene, and ethers. It is a amphoteric compound that is soluble in both acids and bases.
Isonicotinic acid is soluble in hot water and ethanol, and slightly soluble in cold water and ether. Stable to heat and oxidation.

Manufacturing method:
There are two commonly used methods for preparing Isonicotinic acid:
Preparation by decarboxylation of benzoic acid: Benzoic acid reacts with electrophilic reagents such as nitroso hydrogen nitrate under certain conditions to generate para aminobenzoic acid. Isonicotinic acid can be obtained by further oxidation of para aminobenzoic acid.
Preparation by Aminocarboxylation of 3-Pyridinecarboxylic Acid: Isonicotinic acid can be obtained by oxidation and condensation reactions on the carboxyl group of 3-Pyridinecarboxylic Acid in the presence of ammonia.

Isonicotinic Acid is a widely-used intermediate. It is used as a primary raw material in the production of anti-tuberculosis drugs like isoniazid, terfenadine and Isonicotinic esters. It is also used as an electroplating additon, photosensitive resin stabiliser, polyvinylchloride heat stabilizer and non-ferrous-metal flotation agent.
Isonicotinic can be combined with hydrazine, melted, and dehydrated to make isoniazid. Isoniazid is a potent antibacterial agent that has good efficacy and low toxicity.
It can be used to treat pulmonary tuberculosis in various stages, including the dissolution and diffusion stage and the absorption improvement phase. It is also used to treat tuberculous syphilis, extrapulmonary tuberculosis, and tuberculous nephritis. Tablets, injections and other formulations are available.
