Description
N-Methylformamide is a colorless or slightly yellow clear oily liquid at room temperature and pressure. Its texture is clear and has good fluidity, but it appears slightly viscous compared to pure water in appearance. It usually does not have any significant suspension or precipitation, presenting a homogeneous liquid phase. N-methylformamide’s melting point is -3.3 degrees C. This means that it is liquid in most climates but may solidify in extremely cold winters. It is a liquid with a high boiling point, approximately 180-185 degrees Celsius. It also decomposes at about 150 deg C. The density of the liquid is 1.00g/cm3, similar to that of water. Its high dipole moment and high polarity are its unique and crucial physical properties. This gives it a dielectric constant that is abnormally high. This characteristic directly leads to its extraordinary solubility – it can be infinitely miscible with water and various alcohols, as well as dissolve numerous organic compounds, inorganic salts, and polymers, becoming an excellent non proton polar solvent.
