Description
Pigment Red 53:1 (CAS 5160-02-1, C₃₄H₂₄BaCl₂N₄O₈S₂, MW 888.94) is a monoazo lake pigment. It is the barium salt of the dye formed from CLT-acid (2-amino-4-methyl-5-chlorobenzenesulfonic acid) and β-naphthol. It is also known by its color index C.I. 15585:1 and common trade names such as Lake Red C, C, and D&C Red No. 9. It appears as a bright yellow-shade red powder with a melting point of 343-345°C and density of 1.66 g/cm³. It is slightly soluble in water and ethanol, but insoluble in acetone and benzene.
Pigment Red 53:1 was first commercially produced in 1903 and has since become a workhorse pigment in the industry. Its color is described as a “warm red” —it is distinctly more yellow than Pigment Red 57:1. The pigment exhibits strong color strength and excellent transparency in printing ink applications, particularly in gravure inks. It provides good heat stability, withstanding 180°C in general applications and up to 260°C for short durations in HDPE. It offers moderate lightfastness (rated 5-6) and good solvent resistance.
