Description

1. Chemical properties and classificationPolybutylene terephthalate, also known as polybutylene terephthalate, is a thermoplastic polyester resin made by the condensation reaction of terephthalic acid (PTA) and 1,4-butanediol (BDO). The molecular formula is (C 12H 12O 4) n. It is one of five important engineering plastics, and a member of the polymer family that ranks on par with Polybutylene Terephthalate. The first time it was synthesized in 1942 by German scientist P. Schlack, its name “butanediol”, refers to the polymerized monomers’ carbon chain structure.

2. Physical characteristics and morphology
The appearance of polybutylene terephthalate is usually a milky white semi transparent to opaque solid with a glossy surface, and it is a semi crystalline material. Its melting point is about 223-233 ° C, and its long-term use temperature can reach 120-140 ° C. Polyurethane terephthalate has excellent comprehensive performance: it not only has high mechanical strength, good toughness, and fatigue resistance, but also has excellent self-lubricating properties and low friction coefficient. In addition, its moisture absorption is extremely low, and it can still maintain stable electrical insulation and dimensional accuracy in humid environments.

3. Industry positioning and production background
Polybutylene terephthalate plays a crucial role in the industrial sector. Due to its fast crystallization speed and good fluidity, it is very suitable for rapid injection molding, with a short processing cycle and high production efficiency

Although polybutylene terephthalate itself has many advantages, in order to overcome its disadvantages such as low notch impact strength and large molding shrinkage, glass fiber is commonly used for reinforcement and modification in industry. The modified polybutylene terephthalate has doubled its mechanical strength and heat resistance, making it a core material for manufacturing high demand products such as electronic appliances and automotive components.

The application of Polybutylene Terephthalate

The main uses of polybutylene terephthalate
The application of polybutylene terephthalate highly relies on its excellent electrical insulation, heat resistance, mechanical strength, and processing convenience. By compounding with additives such as glass fiber and flame retardants, polybutylene terephthalate materials have widely penetrated into the fields of electronics and electrical engineering, automotive manufacturing, and daily consumer goods.

Electronics and Electrical Industry
In the field of electronics and electrical engineering, polybutylene terephthalate is an indispensable material, especially for connectors, switches, and spools.
Polybutylene terephthalate has extremely high volume resistivity and dielectric strength, coupled with its stable size and chemical corrosion resistance, making it ideal for manufacturing precision integrated circuit sockets, relay housings, potentiometer brackets, and micro motor end caps. In terms of device heat dissipation, polybutylene terephthalate is widely used in the production of heat dissipation fan frames and blades in devices such as computers and projectors, thanks to its good rigidity, heat resistance, and ease of forming into complex shapes. In addition, it is also an ideal choice for producing deflection coils, tuner housings, as well as various high-voltage components such as circuit breakers and temperature switches for color televisions.

automotive industry
With the development of automotive lightweighting trend, the application of polybutylene terephthalate in automotive manufacturing is increasing day by day. Polybutylene terephthalate and its alloys (such as polybutylene terephthalate/PC alloy) are commonly used to manufacture large components such as car bumpers and body panels. In terms of power and functional systems, polybutylene terephthalate is used to manufacture components such as window motor housings, carburetor assemblies, transmission gearboxes, igniters, and wiper covers. Due to its oil resistance, chemical corrosion resistance, and ability to withstand the high temperature environment of the engine compartment, it is also a reliable material for fuel supply system components and spark plug peripheral components.

Industrial and consumer goods
In the field of industrial machinery, polybutylene terephthalate is processed into pump housings, valve components, and blades for food processing equipment, utilizing its high strength and corrosion resistance to meet strict operating requirements.
In the field of energy and communication, polybutylene terephthalate is used as a coating material for optical fiber cables to protect the internal fibers from external damage. In daily consumer goods, polybutylene terephthalate can also be seen everywhere: the lamp holder of energy-saving lamps, the shell of hair dryers, parts of coffee utensils, and even the sole of ice skates all rely on the support of polybutylene terephthalate. In addition, high-quality toothbrush bristles and makeup brush bristles are often made of polybutylene terephthalate, utilizing its excellent resilience and wear resistance.
Polybutylene terephthalate is one of the cornerstone materials that support the operation of modern industry. After being reinforced with glass fiber, it silently ensures electrical safety, structural stability, and device operation by hiding in the interfaces of smartphones, under the hood of cars, and at the core of household appliances, thanks to its “combination of rigidity and flexibility”.
