Describe Sodium sulfate

Sodium sulfate is a chemical raw material that is used to produce sodium sulfide, sodium silicate and other products. It is also used as a filler in synthetic detergents, and as a cooking ingredient for the production sulfate-pulp in the paper industry.

Also known as anhydrous Saltpeter or sodium sulfate. Small white monoclinic powder or crystals are the appearance. Relative density 2.68, melting point 884 . The aqueous solution, when dissolved in water is neutral.

The sodium sulfate dissolved in ethanol is insoluble. Sodium sulfate absorbs moisture easily when exposed to the air and turns into hydrated sodiumsulfate. At temperatures between 32.4 and 223 degrees, it becomes a polycrystalline homogeneous substance that takes on the shape of a diamond. It forms monoclinic crystalline structures at higher temperatures and hexagonal crystalline structures when it reaches 241°C.

Anhydrous sodium powder is a high purity anhydrous sodium salt with fine particles.

Two types of crystalline sodium sulfate hydrates exist: heptahydrate sodiumsulfate (Na2SO4*7H2O), which is a hexagonal or tetragonal white crystal that loses its water at 24.4.

A second type of sodium sulfate is sodium sulfite Na2SO4*10H2O. It’s also known as sodium silicate, sodium hydrosulfite, and saltpeter. Monoclinic colorless crystals with a melting temperature of 32.38 and a density of 1.46 g/cm3. It loses its crystalline form at 100 and turns into anhydrous sodium, which is soluble in both water and dry air.

The sodium sulfate is used in a variety of applications, including chemical analysis, dye detection, mordants in the printing and dying industry, for manufacturing Sodium sulfate and porcelain glazes, nitrogen measurements, paper pulp and as a diuretic and laxative in medicine.

Sodium sulfate Application

Usage 1

The production of glass and paper requires a lot of sodium sulfate. About 70% of all sodium sulfate is used for papermaking and the cellulose industry.

It is neutral salt and is used in synthetic detergents. It can be added to detergents to reduce surface tension.

It is used as a dye diluent and auxiliary agent in dyeing and printing. It can be used to dye cotton fibers with direct dyes or sulfurized dyes.

In the chemical industry, sodium sulfate can be used to make sodium sulfide and other products such as gypsum or sodium silicate. A method of producing sulfuric, sulfuric, soda ash and ammoniumsulfate using sodium sulfate was developed. However, these methods are not widely used due to the high cost.

In the laboratory, sodium sulfate can be used to cool things down. Saltpeter is used in medicine as a laxative. The majority of sodium sulfate entering the body is retained in the gastrointestinal system and not absorbed. It can cause intestinal peristalsis, increase the volume of the intestines and maintain a certain level of permeability.

Antidotes for lead and barium poisoning include sodium sulfate. Lead poisoning can be treated with 10% saltpeter for gastric lavage, or by taking a 1-2% sodium-sulfate solution orally.

Usage 2

As an analytical reagent, sodium sulfate is also used as a mordant.

Usage 3

Agent for the manufacture of caramel pigment. Edible pigment diluent. Food processing can benefit from sodium sulfate.

Usage 4

Sodium sulfate mainly serves as a filler for synthetic detergents. In the paper industry, steamed and cooked agents are used to make kraft pulp. In the glass industry, soda ash is replaced. Chemical industry uses it to manufacture sodium sulfide and sodium silicate. Textile industry uses it to prepare coagulation baths for spinning vinylon. In the pharmaceutical industry, it is used as a laxative. Also used in leather, non-ferrous metals and other fields.

Usage 5

In medicine and other industries, such as glass, papermaking, printing, dyeing, synthetic fibres, and leather manufacturing, sodium sulfate is used to precipitate salts and as a coagulant.

Usage 6

Kjeldahl nitrogen determination. Dry organic liquid Test serum protein. Test serum protein

FAQ

It comes down to the presence of bound water within the crystal lattice. The calcined anhydrous grade (\(Na_{2}SO_{4}\)) is completely water-free, presenting as a dry white powder or fine granule with a powerful moisture-binding capacity—making it perfect as an industrial desiccant or detergent bulking agent. In contrast, decahydrated sodium sulfate (\(Na_2SO_4 \cdot 10H_2O\)), or mirabilite, carries ten molecules of crystallization water inside its structure. This hydration profile shifts its physical form into distinct white crystals, which industrial buyers primarily channel into specialized fluxing applications like glass manufacturing.

This versatile mineral salt anchors several high-volume manufacturing lines. Its absolute largest market share is as a functional processing aid and anti-caking filler in powder laundry detergents, where it ensures smooth material flow and prevents clumping. The second critical bottleneck it solves is in commercial glassworks; it acts as an indispensable fining agent to sweep away micro-bubbles from the molten glass bath while simultaneously shaving down the required melting energy. Outside of those sectors, processing mills funnel it into Kraft paper pulping, textile dye-bath fixing, and organic synthesis drying workflows.

Because this compound is highly hygroscopic, your logistics team must store the bags inside a bone-dry, well-ventilated warehouse facility. Keep the packaging drums or valve bags hermetically sealed to isolate the chemical from ambient humidity and rain during cross-docking. When maintained under stable room temperatures on pallets with proper floor clearance, the material will easily preserve its structural and chemical integrity for up to 5 full years. As a safety precaution, optimize your stacking footprint far away from strong acids and reactive metals like aluminum or magnesium alloys.

No, under standard international transport frameworks, it is treated as a stable, non-hazardous, and non-regulated commodity. It will not spontaneously ignite or explode. However, you must educate your material handlers on handling safety: if subjected to extreme thermal stress or open flames, it will decompose to emit hazardous sulfur dioxide (\(SO_{x}\)) and sodium oxide vapors. Furthermore, heavy airborne dust can cause respiratory tract irritation, and excessive ingestion can trigger gastrointestinal distress. Always manage runoff during washing to avoid dumping high concentrations into local aquatic ecosystems
