Description

Sulforhodamine, B is a water-soluble xanthene color. Its physical properties can be seen in the macroscopic morphology of its dye and its basic physical parameters. Pure products are usually dark red, reddish brown or small particles that have a metallic luster at room temperature and under pressure. The molecular structure of Sulforhodamine B is a strong absorber and reflector towards certain wavelengths. This gives it a distinct appearance. Sulforhodamine B has a density that is higher than water. However, the exact value can vary depending on how it was produced and whether there are impurities. The solubility of the dye is a key physical property. It is highly soluble and forms a clear, deep red solution in water. It is used as an acidic colorant in aqueous baths. It can be dissolved moderately in polar organic liquids like ethanol and methanol. However, its solubility in non-polar fluids, such as toluene and benzene, is very low. This is due to the high polarity and ability of the molecule to form hydrogen bond with the solvent. Sulforhodamine B has a good thermal stability. It can be used at temperatures that are conventional for dyeing and processing without decomposition. However, excessive exposure to high temperatures can lead to color changes and decomposition. The particle size will influence the dissolution rate, and uniformity of solution, which will impact its performance. Therefore, industrial products have specifications that are based on this. Sulforhodamine B’s optical properties are of particular importance, and constitute its main function as a colorant. The aqueous dye solution has a vibrant orange-red to red color. This is due to the conjugated xanthene structure, which can absorb light in blue-green regions of the visible spectrum. It also reflects and transmits red light. Its color depth and solution concentration are determined by Lambert Beer’s Law. Within a range of concentration, its absorbance is proportional. This makes it ideal for colorimetric analyses. Sulforhodamine B’s fluorescence is another important optical property. It emits a strong yellow-green fluorescence when excited by shorter wavelength sources of light such as blue or ultraviolet light. When returning to its ground state, the molecules release energy, usually in the form radiation, and return to their excited state. (The peak emission wavelength is typically around 550 to 570 nanometers). Its high fluorescence quant yield and large Stokes Shift (wavelength difference between the excitation and emission peak) makes it valuable in fields like fluorescence staining and labeling. Its physical properties are also sensitive to the environment. For example, the pH of the solution can affect its color depth or fluorescence intensity. The presence of metal ions could also cause color changes or precipitation. This stability is key to their performance under different scenarios.

The application of Sulforhodamine B

Sulforhodamine B as a high-performance xanthene color, has applications that go far beyond the traditional textile dyeing categories. Its bright color, excellent solubility in water, and strong fluorescence properties make it a valuable component of modern industrial and high tech fields.
1. Coloring Traditional and Specialty Fabrics
In the textile industry Sulforhodamine B dyes polyamide and protein fibers. Natural protein fibers, such as silk and wool, contain many amino groups. In acidic dyeing solutions, fibers with a positive charge can form a strong bond through ionic bonds with the sulfonic anion of the Sulforhodamine B.

Sulforhodamine B can also dye nylon fibers, which contain amino groups similar to those in nylon. The fabric will take on a vibrant red color.

It’s not just used to dye red, but is also used to create composite colors like purple and orange. It is used to color leather in addition to dyeing conventionally. This principle is similar to that of dyeing protein fibers.

Sulforhodamine B can be used in these applications to provide moderate sun resistance and good wet-treatment fastness. It is also used for high-end inks to be printed on special fabrics, such as silk or wool. The inks have a smooth writing performance, and vibrant color rendering effects.

2. Fluorescent labels in biomedical research and scientific research
Sulforhodamine B has a high-tech and valuable application. It is used widely as a fluorescent dye in cell biology and molecular biology research.

Cell staining: Fluorescence microscopy can be used to examine the morphology, the structure and some physiological processes in cells. This is possible because molecules bind to specific components of the cell and emit strong fluorescent light when excited by lasers of a certain wavelength.

Its universality, despite its lower affinity for nuclei than some dyes specific to the cell, makes it an excellent cytoplasmic and whole-cell marker.

Sulforhodamine’s fluorescence is used in fluid mechanics, medical diagnosis, and environmental science. Sulforhodamine B’s fluorescence properties are used as tracers in fluid mechanics, environmental science, and medical diagnosis.

The Sulforhodamine B molecule’s active groups can covalently bond with amino and other protein groups, “labeling” them with fluorescence.

This method allows researchers to track the location, movement, interaction, and expression level of specific proteins in cells. It is an important tool for immune detection techniques like Western Blot or ELISA.

Additives functional in industrial and consumer goods
Sulforhodamine B is a useful additive that can be found in a variety of industrial and consumer products.

Sulforphanine is added to cosmetics for a bright red color. This includes shampoo, bath gel and foam shaving cream.

Due to its high coloring power, it’s not usually used in resident cosmetics, to prevent long-lasting skin coloring. This is most common in temporary cosmetics that need to have a visual impact.

Sulforhodamine B is used for the production of red inks, inkjet printers, and colored pen pens. The fluorescent model produces ink for fluorescent markers, which emit an eye-catching fluorescent under natural or ultraviolet light.
