Description
Tartrazine, one of three primary colors in synthetic food colorings, is the most commonly used color. Tartrazine, a yellow powder with an azo heterocyclic molecule, can be used to color food, beverages and cosmetics. It is also safe for use in tobacco, feeds, pharmaceuticals, cosmetics and other fields. Tartrazine Chemical Properties Tartrazine appears as a yellowish powder with an orange hue. The 0.1% solution is yellow and has no odor. Water, propylene and glycerol are soluble, but ethanol is not. Oils and fats and oils are insoluble. The solubility of 21 is 11. 8% (water), 3.0% (50% ethanol). Tartrazine is resistant to heat, acid, light, salt, and citric and tartaric acids. It has a poor resistance to oxidation. When exposed to alkali, it turns red and then fades. The maximum wavelength of absorption is 428nm plus or minus 2nm. The oral LD50 for rats is more than 2000mg/kg and the ADI0-7.5mg/kg. (FAO/WHO 1994). Tartrazine is a fine yellow powder that has no smell. Slowly dissolves in alkaline or acidic aqueous solution, but is insoluble in organic solvents and water. It is more resistant to heat and light than Tartrazine.

The application of Tartrazine
Usage 1
According to Chinese regulations, tartrazine can be used as a food colorant in fruit juices (flavored), carbonated beverages (including blended liquor), pickled vegetables (flavored), green plums (flavored), red and green silk candy, pastry packaging and canned watermelon. The maximum amount of 0.1g/kg is allowed. The maximum amount for plant protein drinks, lactic acid bacteria beverages and pastry packaging is 0.05g/kg. The maximum amount for ice cream is also 0.02g/kg.
