Describe

Urea is also called carbamide or urea. It is the final product of protein metabolism and an important organic nitrogen compound excreted from animals.

Urea is a white, granular product that appears in needle-shaped or prismatic form. When mixed with iron or other heavy metals, the color changes to a light yellow or red. It is odorless and tastes like nothing. It dissolves easily in water, benzene and ethanol but not in chloroform or ether.

Urea is an organic fertilizer which does not contain any harmful substances. Hydrolysis products NH+4 or HCO-3 are absorbed by plants and used. It can be applied continuously, and has little or no impact on soil properties.

Urea is suitable to be used on a wide range of crops and soils. Its fertilizer efficiency is comparable to ammonium sulfur with the same nitrogen content.

Urea is better than ammonium sulfur in paddy fields with “aging” that are susceptible to hydrogen sulfide poisoning due to the lack of active iron.

A high level of urea in the soil or excessive use of the substance can cause urea and ammonia toxicity. The more sensitive the crop is to urea, the higher its urease activity.

Urea is a good supplement to feed anti-chick animals.

In the industry, urea can be used as a raw materials for urea formaldehyde and melamine-formaldehyde resin. In medicine, urea is used to make drugs like tetracycline and caffeine.

In the dye industry, urea is used to make reduced brown BR (phthalocyanine Blue B), etc. The bags are internally lined with plastic film, and then wrapped in woven bag. It should be kept in a dry storage area and not mixed or stored with acids.

Application

Urea, as an important organic compound, plays a crucial role in multiple fields. In terms of physiological metabolism, urea is the main end product of mammalian protein metabolism, synthesized through the liver’s urea cycle, and ultimately excreted from the body through the kidneys. Healthy adults excrete approximately 20-30 grams of urea per day through urine, which accounts for about half of the solid content in urine.

In clinical practice, the level of blood urea nitrogen is an important indicator for evaluating renal function, and changes in its content can reflect the filtration function of the kidneys.

In agricultural production, urea is the most commonly used high-efficiency nitrogen fertilizer. Its nitrogen content is as high as 46%, making it the variety with the highest nitrogen content among all solid nitrogen fertilizers.

After being applied to the soil, Urea gradually transforms into ammonium nitrogen and nitrate nitrogen that plants can absorb under the action of urease. This transformation characteristic makes Urea suitable as both a base fertilizer and a topdressing, with significant yield increasing effects on major crops such as rice, wheat, and corn. To fully utilize the fertilizer effect, it is necessary to pay attention to deep soil covering during use to avoid ammonia volatilization loss.

The demand for urea in the industrial sector is also enormous. As an important chemical raw material, Urea is the starting material for the production of products such as melamine and urea formaldehyde resin.

In terms of environmental protection, Urea solution, as the core component of diesel exhaust treatment fluid, can effectively reduce nitrogen oxides in exhaust gas. In addition, Urea is widely used in cosmetics, pharmaceuticals, laboratories, and other fields, demonstrating diverse applications.

In the medical field, Urea plays a unique role due to its unique physicochemical properties. Dermatology commonly uses 10-40% concentration of urea preparations to treat abnormal keratinization diseases such as fish scale disease and hand and foot cracking. In terms of diagnosis, the urea breath test is an important method for detecting Helicobacter pylori infection, while blood urea testing is a routine indicator for evaluating renal function.

It is worth noting that although Urea is widely used, relevant precautions need to be taken when using it in different fields. In agriculture, it is necessary to avoid mixing with alkaline fertilizers. In medicine, appropriate concentrations should be controlled to prevent irritation. In industrial use, safety regulations should be followed.
